Save Money on Heating Bills

Over time, you may notice that your heating bills are lower, thanks to the addition of radiant heating in your floors. These systems are reliable and durable, and they can often outlast the life of your furnace. As long as you properly maintain these flooring systems, they can last for as long as 35 years.

But you can also save money because heated flooring effectively heats rooms from the ground up. In turn, you can keep your thermostat at a lower temperature, and you can enjoy more warmth without the noise that comes from other heating systems.

Heated Floors Can Be Installed in Select Rooms Only

If you aren't ready to splurge on heated flooring for the entire home, you can instead opt for electric radiant floor systems. These are delivered as mats that you can install easily under your flooring. This allows you to pick and choose what rooms you want the heated flooring in, such as in your bathroom or kitchen.

Heated floors are great in recreation rooms, garages, and basements too. In fact, you can find a concrete slab form of heated flooring that's highly durable and perfect for heating rooms that are otherwise difficult to warm because of their location, such as a partially or completely underground basement.

A Heating System You Don't See

If you hate the sight of radiators and other heating units, it's time to upgrade to radiant floor heating, which will be hidden but will be surprisingly effective. This makes it aesthetically pleasing while also giving you more room to put your furniture wherever you wish, without any restrictions.

Less Dust, Fewer Allergies

Other heating systems, such as forced air heating, create the dispersion of odors, germs, and dust throughout your home. But with heated flooring, you don't have to worry about any air blowing around dust and other allergens. This makes it a great choice for those who are sensitive or suffer with allergies.

Choose from a Variety of Styles

The great thing about heated flooring is the fact that it comes in a variety of styles. You can install the heating system underneath tiles in your bathroom or beneath the hardwood flooring in your living room. With many designers and companies like Ellegant Home Design offering so many options, there is something for everyone.

Basically, if you're looking for a way to upgrade your home, add value to it, and enjoy more warmth throughout the winter season, heated flooring is the way to go. Your feet will thank you, as will your wallet when you notice that your heating bills start to drop as a result of this highly efficient system.

How To Make A Room Brighter

Sitting in a dark room all of the time can make you tired, or even depressed. This is why many people look for ways to make a room brighter. There are a few things you can do, some of which are very easy. Don't sit in the dark any longer, and follow the suggestions below to get started.

  1. Lighting – The first thing you should consider is how many lights you currently have in the room, and what kind of lights they are. Lamps are great for making a room seem more comfortable, but they can also make the room a little darker. If you want a brighter room, you may want to go with some overhead lights. Overhead lights can brighten up an entire room, and depending on the model, can be pretty easily to install. If that isn't an option, adding more lamps around the room may help. Lastly, look at the bulbs you have installed in either your overhead lights or your lamps. You may be able to put in brighter bulbs, which will help to brighten up the room.
  2. Windows – If you can't artificially add more light to the room, maybe you can increase the amount of natural light. Depending on which way your windows are facing, you may be able to get more light into the room by simply opening up the blinds. Adding more windows to a room is a big job, one usually completed by a contractor, and so you want to make the most out of the windows you already have. Make sure the blinds are open when the sun is nearby, and check to see what kind of window coverings you currently have. You may be better off buying a different kind of window covering, one that will allow more light inside.
  3. Paint – The third thing you can try is painting the room. If your room is painted a dark color, it will absorb much of the light that is in the room. Painting it something brighter will allow the light to reflect off of it more, and make the room brighter. Painting a room can be a big job, but if you have the right tools or even some help, you should be able to finish it in a day or so. Adding a fresh coat of paint, particularly if it is a brighter color, can go a long way.
  4. Decorations – Lastly, there is one decoration you can try adding that may brighten up a room – a mirror. Having mirrors around the room will not only make the room look bigger, but it will reflect some of the light that is streaming into the room. It may not make a big difference, but when you want to lighten up a room, every lit bit may help.

As you can see, there are several things you can do if you want to make a room brighter. Sitting in a dark room can have some serious health consequences if you do it for too long, so you should try and make that room brighter as soon as you can. Look at the lights you are using in there to see if there are any adjustments you can make. Then move on to trying to get more natural light into the room. If that doesn't work, a fresh coat of paint can make a big difference. Good luck!

Combating the Dreaded South-Facing Living Room

Anyone who has ever gone on the mad dash to find a suitable property to buy will probably know all about orientation. We're all looking for those elusive south-facing gardens - the ones which attract the sun and allow us to sit out during the summer months.

Unfortunately, when it comes to south-facing rooms, problems can start to arise. In some states, it might be nice to get the odd bit of sunshine through the windows, but in others this spells an unbearable environment. In other words, when things really start to heat up, a south-facing room simply becomes inhabitable.

The good thing is that all is most certainly not lost. Up until recently, some people may have pulled the curtains over during the hottest parts of the day and blocked out the powerful UV rays that way. In doing this of course, it means that we're blocking out the "good" natural sunlight - the stuff that means we don't have to flick a light switch.

Now, the situation is changing. We're finally entering an era where the south-facing living room can be habitable. It's all thanks to the blinds industry, with the solar shade arguably being the pick of the products. This is able to filter about 70% of the UV rays, meaning that a room's temperature is immediately lowered while it is still able to benefit from the natural sunlight. Problem solved.

The above is the ideal solution, but we will touch upon some further advancements in this field which have made it so much easier to control temperature in rooms that traditionally attracted a lot of heat. The insulated shade is another option and while this doesn't arrive with the premise of allowing in natural light, it is able to insulate a room (in both ways should we add) so that the hot rays aren't able to penetrate the glazing. You could effectively achieve the above with any type of blind, but the cellular design of these shades mean that they are ideal to block heat passing through.

It's not all about funky designs though. Let's not forget that it's possible to have an effect on temperature, without even affecting the temperature. We're not talking in riddles here; what we are inferring is the ability to use color to trick the body into thinking that a room is cooler than it really is. Shades of blues and greens have traditionally been able to achieve this, while also remember that anything involving reds, oranges and yellows generally promote warmer feelings. Fortunately, blinds now arrive in all sorts of designs so finding an appropriate color will never be an issue.

The last suggestion is probably the least-technical method you can adopt and while it may sound ridiculous, it does have an effect for a lot of households. However, the point we’re trying to make is that south-facing living rooms don’t have to be greenhouses anymore, through a concoction of window treatment ideas it’s possible to control temperature much more efficiently (and without tuning into an air conditioning system).
